Choosing the Best Cat Litter Mat

in Cats

A good cat litter mat is one that your cat will walk over when leaving the litter box. If he does not then you might have wasted your money.. it only works if he uses it.

Your cat loves to dig and dig until the every last bit of his litter is almost on the outside of the box. Just where is he heading anyway?

What happens is that bits of that annoying litter eventually get sprinkled all over the floor and carpet of your home… even more so with the fine type of litters like clays.

You get out the broom or vacuum to clean up the mess and then several hours later it happens all over again! Frustration is the word that best describes what you may be feeling.

Our feline friends just naturally dig and cover up their excrement… some with more zeal than others.

The solution to the problem is to get a cat litter mat, but not just any old cheap mat, a mat that your cat will actually use.

There are two main types of cat litter mats; one is the type with raised ridges on it. You will know when you have found it because when you press on it, it feels a little funny on the palm of your hand.

The softer mat (without bumps/ridges) is like a regular mat that you would not mind walking on without shoes or socks. The second type with ridges may be one that your cat might not like.

Some cats… and I say some in the most general sort of way will not like stepping on mats with ridges or bumps.

So if you do not like the way it feels.. then your little picky kitten may reject it.

Remember that your cat has sensitive paw pads (a lot like your feet). If he does not like the way the new mat feels he may just decide to jump over it. Your house will still have litter scattered all over the place as well.

Ah…the joys of owning a little fur kid…

This is not your dream scenario now is it? Not to worry, because your cat may just have no problem at all using a textured variety.

However, if you discover that you still have litter spread all over your house then check your litter mat. It may just be the type he does not like.

Perform a little experiment and change the litter mat to a softer mat that you would not mind walking on barefoot. You might discover that kitty will like it if you like it too!
