Choosing a cat breed can be a bit daunting, especially if you dont know very much about cats! When considering a cat, you must be sure to choose a breed that will best suit your lifestyle. Some breeds require more physical activity than others, and some require much more grooming. Look below to find the top five most popular cat breeds. You will also find a brief description about each breeds grooming requirements and personality type.

The Oriental breed is very inquisitive, and loyal to boot. While they look very fragile, they are actually quite muscular and lithe. They are of an energetic nature and would do very well with a covered yard for plenty of room to exercise.

The American Shorthair is a very loving and family-oriented breed. They are perfectly happy to be house cats, although they are also predisposed to be great hunters. They have a very powerful body structure and a short, thick coat of hair. They do not require very much grooming and come in a variety of colors and patterns.

One of the most popular cat breed by looks alone is the Birman. They have characteristic bright blue eyes, a white body, and darker patches on the ears, tail, legs, and face. While they enjoy a good romp, they do not require a great deal of attention from their owner. They will take affection when youre ready to give it, but are happy to lounge quietly.

A Sphynx cat may make an appropriate pet for you if you dont mind spending a bit of extra affection and care on your cat. They love attention, and as they have very little hair (like peach-fuzz), they can easily become cold; so you must remember that if the room is too cold for your bare skin, it is likely too cold for the cat. Theyre wonderful if you want a cat that will snuggle under the covers with you!

The Ragdoll breed is one of the best breeds of cat to choose for a family with children. This breed is very cautious not to play with claws or teeth, but will also not be able to defend itself very well if left outside. It has a very full, lush coat of fur that requires regular grooming and is among the larger cat breeds out there.

Hopefully you have a better understanding of which type of cat would be best for you. Just keep in mind the requirements that each breed can demand, and be sure that whichever cat you choose, you are up to maintaining it. The best rule of thumb to go by is to choose a cat whose activity levels and lifestyle best match your own.
